For a daily driver, the CVT in my 23 Outback is fine. It’s smooth, fits the chore of commutes, is quiet and easy to live with on long trips. After 10hrs of driving, I’m not fatigued at all. Most of that is due to the soundproofing, but also the balanced boxer and smooth transmission. No fluid is lifetime, so I’ve taken the risk of changing my own CVT fluid every 25k miles. It’s easy and fairly cheap, you just can’t be an idiot. I’d rather have a Subaru or Toyota eCVT than a DSG in terms of reliability. I’d rather have the CVT than an 8 or 10 speed automatic… also because of reliability, but also drivability as they’re always looking for the right gear. I’d rather have a manual than a CVT for reliability, but for my needs a manual would be an absolute chore in traffic after a long day of training. Nissan gave CVTs a bad rap, as did “lifetime” fluids. Everyone uses “lifetime” fluids, so this grift isn’t unique to Subaru. As long as you maintain the components in a modern vehicle, they will last. I have a 2016 Outback with 285k miles. No head gasket issues. No transmission issues. That’s because I maintain it like I do my body with medical screenings and treatments. People like to blame mechanical failures on OEMs rather than accept responsibility for their own ignorance and undeserved pride.

Some are good, many are sorry. Jatco is a good example of a sorry one and are commonly used in Nissan.

I didn't realize that The Engineers were asking me the question. I used to know that they are mostly educated dummies. Guess I'm getting old and forgetful .

CVT trannies esp. the Nissan brand has received some real bad press on the internet/RUclips platform. Some even go to the extent of negativity re: this tranny. [It FAILS just after the warranty period for some reason or another. 😑😐 ] They even go to the extent of telling new owners NEVER BELIEVE their Transimision Oil change schedule & to do it much earlier, or else ! There is nothing like a manual tranny, and maybe the basic AT transmission which are 'known quantities' and with parts and service available anywhere. esp. when NOT THE DEALER, so that one does not get 'ripped off.'

An Overcomplicated much more expensive to fix system which does not bring any advantages substantive enough to justify its use. Just compare the prices of overhauling a normal auto box vis a vis any CVT. Since the advent of CVTs many more transmission failures than before are being reported. How can using belts and friction be a better option than intermeshing metal gears. And how can such a system last longer.? Ask any mechanic who has experience of CVT's and he will tell you .Stay Away!

CVTs suck and will break if you get on the gas. They might work in small lightweight cars if you never try to go fast but other than that they are horribly unreliable compared to regular transmissions.

Have driven Subaru, Honda and Nissan CVTs. They might be ok on flat ground and if you drive 4 land roads. Around here they suck.. its almost impossible to pass someone, especially going uphill. Manualy shifting helps, but if i have to do that, let me have a simple, reliable gearbox.

Why do you have to stress on the word 'turbine's? It is confused with another word? Or do you think people are too dumb to know the word turbine?

CVTs have always been good for scooters, tho servicing the belts and little parts is far tougher than it should be. For cars, I have seen no problems that were not due to an over-weened attachment to thinking your commuter car is a race car. If you drive a Toyota Prius responsibly, probably you will never need to have your CVT serviced. Compare that to automatic transmissions from pre-CVT days. Do you LIKE spending a thousand dollars to get a rebuilt transmission for your gas guzzling hot rod?

I generally drove manual and had some experience driving DCT. My dad used to drive a Toyota Verso which was a CVT and I absolutely hated it for its lack of responsiveness. I recently bought a Lexus IS (hybrid) which uses the e-CTV and I actually quite like it. The manual transmission mode is quite useless to be honest.

Don't you think the last diagram is explained backwards? Doesn't the bigger disc rotate slower and the smaller disc rotate faster? Or did you explain the other cvt backwards? I think smaller disc spin lower then bigger disc if they are connected.

First of all you didn't tell us if there were any ones that were better design than the others and second of all you explain the last type of transmission but did not say what cars came with those. Also you did not mention which type Honda uses

176,000km trouble free toyota cvt , after 180,000km trouble free Honda cvt. If you don't like them, don't buy them . I love them. So much smoother, more economical than manual or torque converter autos. I will always buy cvt in future.

My FORD XR6 had 220k with a 6 speed transmission before servicing it, thats because the salesman said sealed for life, its now done 264k changes good as new. Why change to a complicated piece of s___t CVT

I have CVT’s and E CVT’s all Hondas. They are different but in my opinion the E CVT is the best. Both are smooth and quiet.
